James Garry joined Strange, Strange and Gardner in 1986 as a Consulting Forensic Engineer undertaking the impartial investigation, reporting, and giving evidence as Expert Witness on all aspects of Employers Liability Claims arising out of Industrial Accidents in factories, offices, shops etc including Occupational Health and Safety matters and disputes concerning the operation of Plant and Machinery.
James has investigated over 3000 claims, the majority of which have been in personal injury cases with some commercial disputes, product liability claims and criminal investigations. The simpler cases involve lifting of weights, the use of hand tools and general machinery, slips, trips and falls, the use of cranes and slinging, woodworking machines and toolroom machinery, scaffolding, ladders and construction work etc. He has also investigated claims involving upper limb disorders, vibration white finger, HAVS and dermatitis. Over the years he has undertaken hundreds of NIHL investigations, almost all of which are now on a Single Joint Expert basis, with many instructions from multiple parties. He has been involved in investigating more complex cases involving fire damage on spark erosion machines, collapse of equipment such as storage tanks, aluminium ladder failures, trench collapses and catastrophic crane failures. He has also investigated fatal accidents, road traffic accidents including low velocity rear impact cases and reconstructions, product safety investigations and accidents resulting in Health and Safety Executive prosecution or investigations.
Instructions from Claimants and Defendants are roughly equal in proportion, and a significant number of instructions are now on a single joint expert basis.
