Consultant Surgeon and Surgical Oncologist
OBE MA MD FRCS (Ed, Eng)
London and South East England
I have 45 years of consultant level experience, this has been across a much wider range of surgical specialisms than would be the experience of a fully trained but newly appointed consultant today.
I have been on the academic staff of five, Russell Group Teaching Hospitals, Cambridge, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Manchester, and University College London. During training, I worked on units covering major trauma, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and units covering the entire range of malignant disease.
I do not have experience of transplantation, or orthopedics.
My Claimant Defendant joint report ratio is 80:15:5.
I provide reports for solicitors, insurers, Crown Prosecution Service, coroners, the Ministry
of Defence, and various ombudsmen.
As a consultant surgeon and surgical oncologist, I was on call for all trauma and general
surgery one day in four for 17 years.
In addition to road, domestic, and criminal trauma, I have experience of terrorist incidents, and military trauma as a locum civilian consultant to the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force.
Malignant disease has three components, epithelial carcinomas, sarcoma/soft tissue, connective tissue lesions, and reticuloendothelial conditions such as malignant myeloma.
I have to date written over 1950 independent expert reports covering all three of the above general modalities.
The specific cancers on which I have reported consequent upon expert knowledge include:
1. oropharynx, mouth tonsil parotid
2. melanoma, BCC, SCC, skin tumours,
3. bronchogenic lung cancers,
4. breast and endocrine cancers,
5. oesophageal and stomach tumours,
6. intestinal/large bowel tumours, colon and rectum,
7. urinary tract tumours, renal bladder and prostate,
8. testicular tumours,
9. gynaecological cancers, uterus, ovary, and primary peritoneal tumours
It is inevitable that delayed diagnosis of cancer results in patients presenting with secondary metastatic disease in circumstances where the primary lesion is difficult to establish.
Please note that as a consequence of my long experience across this wide range of surgical problems, I have developed lists of senior consultants based across the UK whose opinion I respect and as a consequence of working on complex cases with them.
I am pleased to share this list with instructing solicitors who are seeking advice from consultants in different specialities. This listing allows me to advise potential instructing organisations about appropriate experts in cases where patient presentation is not within my range of expert experience .
Attended numerous training courses on medicolegal issues.
Former committee member at the Expert Witness Institute.
