Details

 Dr Jonathan Backhouse is an occupational safety and health pracademic, NEBOSH Diplomate, Chartered Fellow of IOSH, and Fellow of Advance HE, with over 24 years of experience in practice, teaching, and professional development.  His postgraduate qualifications include two Master’s degrees and a Professional Doctorate.

He has been a member of IOSH since 2005 and a volunteer since 2010 (currently serving on their Research and Advisory Group).  He also volunteers with the MS Society Research Network and the UK MS Register. 

Professional Experience:

  •  Leading the implementation of health and safety policies and management systems
  •  Preparing risk assessments and conducting surveys
  •  Auditing workplaces, inspecting activities, and investigating accidents
  •  Undertaking workplace fire risk assessments
  •  Providing expert witness and related support in civil and criminal matters
  •  Developing, delivering, and assessing health and safety courses
  •  Supervising postgraduate learners and lecturing as a visiting academic
  •  Writing and reviewing course materials, articles, and books.

Expert Witness Experience:

  • Supporting clients following HSE and local fire authority visits.
  • Handling noise and vibration claims, and workplace injury matters, in civil proceedings.
  • Undertaking preparatory work on a fatal fall from height in a criminal matter with no local authority prosecution.
  • Reviewing an expert witness report in a CPS corporate manslaughter matter.
