Mr Gray qualified in Medicine from Cambridge University in 1982. He is a respected and experienced ophthalmologist who, having worked in many centres of excellence in the UK, is proficient in all aspects of general ophthalmology. He has a special interest in the diagnosis and management of external eye disease, especially in relation to ocular chemical injuries as well all aspects of trauma involving the eye. He has worked as a medico- legal adviser to the Defence Medical Services, providing medical advice to medical personnel as well as to other government departments. He is conversant with the legal aspects of the consent process and all aspects of medical negligence.
In his military career, Mr Gray gained much experience in trauma to the eye and gained special expertise in the ocular damage caused by the CS incapacitant spray deployed by the British Police. He has been instructed as a single joint expert in many personal injury cases concerning this agent. He held the appointment of medico-legal adviser in the Army's Medical Directorate where, in addition to giving advice and support to medical personnel, he was also involved in the assessment and management of complex personal injury claims as well as issues of medical negligence and drafting responses to ministerial questions. He has considerable expertise in the assessment of cases regarding the exemption from inheritance tax where the death can be attributed to active military service
He undertook his pre-clinical education at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University where he also read Part II Genetics, an interest which he has maintained throughout his clinical career. This also gave him an insight into the Philosophy of Science, in how to address a problem logically and to analyse results statistically. His clinical studies were undertaken at St George's Hospital in London and he graduated with a primary medical qualification from Cambridge University. He held training posts in most of the surgical specialities including Accident & Emergency, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, and Neurosurgery; subsequently specializing in Ophthalmology and gained experience in all of its sub-specialities, including refractive surgery. He held the appointment of Consultant Ophthalmologist at Yeovil District Hospital in Somerset but now works in private practice.
