I have been involved in medico-legal work as an expert witness since 2013. I have been instructed by the Central Legal Office (Scotland), the National Crime Agency (NCA), the Home Office, HM Coroner, the Investigatory Powers Commissioner’s Office (IPCO) and solicitors in the UK and overseas. I am a registered medical expert witness with the National Crime Agency (England). I have received formal training in expert medico-legal work from Bond Solon, London. I have experience of giving evidence in Court (HM Coroner, criminal and civilian). I have been an invited expert for national level inquiries (Forbury terrorist attack, Southport Inquiry).

I have held a personal Chair in Pre-hospital Emergency Care at the University of Surrey since 2016. I was awarded an MBE by HM The Queen for Services to Emergency Healthcare in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

I graduated MBChB(Hons) from Edinburgh University in 2004 with an Honours degree and four individual class prizes. I gained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 2007. I was awarded Doctorate of Medicine in 2011 for a research project on pre-hospital resuscitation. I gained the Diploma of Immediate Medical Care from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, in 2009 and Fellowship of Immediate Medical Care in 2018. I gained Fellowship of the College of Emergency Medicine in 2013 and was appointed Consultant in Emergency Medicine at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 2014.

I undertook additional training in Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine in Scotland, London and Surrey. My clinical time is divided between working in Emergency Departments in Edinburgh and on the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. I am clinically active in Emergency Medicine and pre-hospital research. 

I have direct experience of pre-hospital and hospital Emergency Medicine. I have been an active British Association of Immediate Care Doctor (BASICS) since 2006 and have worked for the Emergency Medical Retrieval Service, Scotland; London’s Air Ambulance and Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance Trust. I am a Clinical Lead and Deputy Medical Director for Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. 

I have been involved in ambulance service training since 2008 and regularly teach paramedics in both Scotland and England. I was made an Honorary Fellow of the College of Paramedics (UK).  

I have published over 100 original papers in peer reviewed scientific journals. I have won several prizes including the best research prize at the European Resuscitation Council conference in 2012 and was part of the winning British Medical Journal Emergency Medicine Team of the Year in 2014. I have delivered lectures globally on Emergency Medicine and Pre-hospital Care.

I have been a member of the Resuscitation Council (UK) since 2013 and am a member of the European HEMS and Air Ambulance Committee (EHAC) medical advisory board. I was a member of the writing group for the Resuscitation Council (UK) 2015 guidelines and member of the Resuscitation Council (UK) Community Resuscitation Subcommittee. I have represented the Resuscitation Council on the NHS Pathways clinical group. I sit on Executive of the Faculty of Pre-hospital Care, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. I have served in advisory roles to Governments and large corporations, including the energy, off-shore, military, security, hospitality and VIP sectors.
