I graduated from University College Dublin with MB, BCh, BAO (Hons.) in 1997, having also been awarded the Gallagher Medal in Orthopaedic Surgery in my final year. Following my internship in St. Vincent’s University Hospital, I was appointed to the Dublin Regional Basic Surgical Training Scheme. During these 2 years, I attained my AFRCSI. Subsequent to my 2 years as an SHO, I spent 2 years as a registrar before being appointed to Higher Surgical Training in 2002.
I spent 6 years as an SpR and passed my FRCS (Tr. & Orth.) in November 2006. I was conferred with an MFSEM (UK) in 2007. My CCST was awarded in July 2008 and I was entered in the Register of Medical Specialists in November 2008. From July 2008 until April 2009, I was the arthroplasty fellow to Prof. Theis in the University of Otago, New Zealand. I commenced practice in May 2009 as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Waterford Regional Hospital until December 2012.
In January 2013 I began work in Tallaght University Hospital as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in lower limb arthroplasty. I was the chairman of the Orthopaedic Trauma Department in Tallaght University Hospital from 2013-2016. I was the Chairman of the Medical Board from 2018 to 2021 having previously served as Vice-Chairman. I previously held the post of Senior Lecturer in Trinity College Dublin and was appointed a Clinical Associate Professor in October 2018. I was promoted to full Clinical Professor in Trinity College Dublin in March 2022. In June 2022, I was elected to the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. I have given expert witness on nearly 200 lower limb arthroplasty cases to date.
My Masters in Surgery (MCh) by research was conferred in December 2004. I have been an author of over 120 publications in scientific journals and have published over 100 abstracts. Several of these publications pertain to metal on metal hip arthroplasty. I have been involved in over 250 presentations to learned societies both nationally and internationally, several of which have been prize winning. I am currently a specialist editor with The Surgeon journal. Since May 2024, I have been the Clinical Lead for the Irish National Orthopedic Register.
Throughout my career I have been actively involved in teaching. My first year as a registrar was coupled with the post of Lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery in University College Dublin. I have been an ATLS/EMST instructor for many years during which time I have taught on over 20 courses and am now a course director in 2 centers as well as now instructing on the ATLS Instructors’ Course and sitting on the National ATLS Committee. While in New Zealand, I was an Honorary Lecturer on the Diploma for Sports Medicine at the University of Otago. I have also been part of the faculty on a number of Basic Surgical Skills Courses and am a member of the Irish AO faculty and was its Chairman from 2016-2018. In 2018 I was elected as Vice-President of AO UK & Ireland – the first Irish surgeon to hold this post and was President from 2021 to 2023. I am the senior trustee for AO UK & Ireland. After commencing in Waterford, I was the unit’s representative on BST, BOST and HST Training Committees and was the lead trainer for the unit. I am a past director of the core curriculum for the HST training programme and have been a trainee mentor since the inception of this scheme. In November 2021, I was elected President of the Irish Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery (IITOS) and currently also sit on the Council, Education and Trainers’ and Lower Limb Arthroplasty committees. Previously, I was the Honorary Academic Secretary of the IITOS since 2015. I was a member of the Committee for Surgical Affairs in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland between 2018 and 2022. In addition, I have been an examiner for several MCh theses and a PhD thesis. I have been an external examiner for the MCh programme in the University of Edinburgh and external examiner of the modular MCh programme in University College Cork.
