Details

Dr Michael Newson, is a registered Medical Practitioner currently employed as a Consultant Neuropsychiatrist for CASCAID, based at Lambeth Hospital, South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

He works as substantive NHS Consultant Neuropsychiatrist in the UK’s only psychiatry led mental health service that works exclusively with people living with HIV. Providing expert assessment, liaison and support to people living with acquired brain injury in the context of HIV and HIV-related intracranial infections resulting in neurological and neuropsychiatric illness, including encephalitis.

With 6 years of post-qualification clinical experience, with specific expertise in the sub-specialty of Neuropsychiatry, and Liaison Psychiatry, including work in several National Specialist NHS services at The Maudsley Hospital.

He has also been employed in the same Trust as a Consultant Neuropsychiatrist in the Neuropsychiatry Outpatient service, a national neuropsychiatry service based at the Maudsley Hospital. In this service he provides assessment and management of people with a range of neuropsychiatric conditions, including Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and psychiatric illness in the context of epilepsy and other neurological disorders.

Dr Newson has recently left the Neuropsychiatry Outpatients Service and will be taking up a Consultant role in the Three Boroughs Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) Outpatient Service. Prior to these roles, he was employed as the consultant psychiatrist on LEO Ward, Lambeth Hospital, an acute general adult psychiatric ward.

Prior to consultant roles at South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, Dr Newson completed a year working at the Lishman Unit, a Level 1a national neurorehabilitation unit specialising in the rehabilitation of patients with the neuropsychiatric sequelae of acquired and traumatic brain injury, autoimmune neurological disorders, movement disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, and also neurologically unexplained symptoms.

Dr Newson has written numerous reports in a wide variety of contexts, including section 49 reports, predominantly for people with acquired brain injury in the context of HIV.

Curently writing a book chapter on the prescribing of psychotropic medication in people living with HIV.

Training

Approved by the Secretary of State under Section 12(2), Mental Health Act 1983. Holds Approved Clinician status. Recognised in the GMC Specialist Register as having expertise in General Psychiatry and Liaison Psychiatry.

Membership

Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Section of Neuropsychiatry and the British Neuropsychiatric Association.
