Prof. James East is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Endoscopist and Associate Professor based at the Translational Gastroenterology Unit, John Radcliffe Hospital, University of Oxford. 

For the last decade he has been Clinical Lead for Endoscopy and Director of Bowel Cancer Screening, Oxfordshire. He trained in Edinburgh, Cambridge and London, with a research fellowship at St. Mark's Hospital and was awarded an MD(Res) from Imperial College for his thesis on "Dysplasia detection at colonoscopy". 

His expertise includes: General gastroenterology, luminal endoscopy, bowel cancer screening, upper and lower advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, tertiary EMR practice, Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG), and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD).

His research interests include quality in endoscopy, serrated polyps, endoscopy in IBD, and advanced endoscopic imaging and therapy. He has published more than 100 peer reviewed scientific articles, five book chapters and ten international guidelines since 2003 and is a regular speaker on endoscopy nationally and internationally.


He wrote the chapters for both Colonoscopy & Flexible sigmoidoscopy, and Upper GI Endoscopy for the 6th Edition of the Oxford Textbook of Medicine.

He was elected to the British Society of Gastroenterology Endoscopy Committee in 2015 and advises the UK National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

He  chairs the Research Committee for the Joint Advisory Group for GI Endoscopy (JAG) who quality assure endoscopy services in the UK.

Intellectual Property

Prof East also has experience of Intellectual Property work and has recently completed a case that went to the High Court, and would be more than happy and available to take on cases of this nature.
