Wing Commander David James Stitson is a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery, at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. He also operates a private Orthopaedic and Medicolegal Practice at the Nuffield Health, Plymouth Hospital.

Mr Stitson served as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in the RAF, leaving in April 2015 with over 26 years service in total. His service included multiple operational deployments (Iraq & Afghanistan) giving significant experience of ballistic and battlefield injuries. He has been in post as a Consultant since November 2002.

His main elective interests include Primary and Revision Arthroplasty of the hip and knee. With a particular sub-specialist interest in hip replacement in the young adult and in the use of CT planning for hip replacement surgery. He also provides a full range of knee replacement procedures ranging from partial knee replacement to complex revision replacement.

Mr Stitson has extensive experience in civilian and military trauma and, participates in the departmental on-call rota as part of the Major Trauma Centre. Within trauma he has developed sub-specialist areas of expertise including the use of the Ilizarov Method and Taylor Spatial Frames for management of complex fractures. He also manages complex intra-articular fractures in the lower limb and regularly operates on lower limb peri-prosthetic fractures.

In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Stitson undertakes medico legal report writing in personal injury and clinical negligence cases. He has provided medico legal reports for over 20 years (14 years at consultant level) and continues to develop this area of practice. Instructions are accepted in personal injury cases on behalf of the Claimant, the Defendant and on a Joint basis, producing approximately 100 reports per annum. Mr Stitson also accept instructions in clinical negligence cases, and is experienced in providing Joint Statements, advising Council and giving evidence in court.
