Formerly Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust ( Queen Elizabeth Hospital ).He retired from full-time practice in Feb 2015, and then remained there as locum consultant for two years. He continues in part-time clinical and medico-legal practice ( NHS and Private Practice) based in Birmingham. He had an Honorary Consultant contract at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London, from 2017-2020 where he was involved with the management of a small number of paediatric TMJ patients. He continues to have a locum NHS Consultant contract at North Manchester General Hospital where he helped to set up an adult TMJ replacement service and where he continues in a mentoring role.
His special interests are maxillofacial trauma, jaw deformity surgery (orthognathic surgery), salivary gland surgery, dental implant surgery, facial pain and TMJ joint problems.
Mr Speculand undertook major TMJ surgery including total joint replacement and has presented and lectured nationally and internationally about this.
He has over 25 years experience of writing medico-legal reports, with a current split of approximately 70% claimant, 25% defendant and 5% as a single joint expert. He also undertakes an increasing number of clinical negligence reports. He completes approximately 70 reports per year. Reports normally take 4-6 weeks once all necessary records have been received.
Medico-Legal examinations are conducted from the Priory Hospital, Priory Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B5 7UG. Instructions can be sent to his Medico-Legal Secretary, Yvette Young.
Mr Speculand is happy to use virtual technology ( Zoom, Microsoft Teams, FaceTime, WhatsApp ) and is able to obtain about 90% of the clinical information that he would get with a F2F consultation and this is usually sufficient to allow cases to progress. Maxillofacial imaging is available via Cavendish Imaging Birmingham. The fees for preparing a medical report are usually £950-£1350 plus VAT, depending on the complexity.
