Mr Manu Sood

I am a Consultant Plastic and Hand Surgeon based at the internationally renowned St Andrews Centre for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. I have over 24 years of experience in reconstructive surgery and hand surgery as a Consultant in both the NHS and the private sector. Alongside my clinical practice I conduct clinical research, teach senior trainees and Consultants and examine for the Specialist Diploma in Hand Surgery on behalf of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand. I have been an Examiner for ten years and was a member of the Committee of Examiners for the BSSH Diploma in Hand Surgery for five years.  

I trained extensively in Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery both in the UK and abroad before becoming a Consultant in the NHS and developing my private practice. I was the Clinical Tutor in Plastic Surgery for three years with the responsibility for the training of Plastic Surgeons prior to their appointment as Consultants.  

I am the Senior Hand Surgeon at the St Andrews Centre for Hand Surgery which is the Regional Hand Centre for Essex and parts of East Anglia and provides both trauma and elective hand surgery services for 3.2 million people.  

I am the Medical Director for Plastic Surgery for the Mid and South Essex Hospitals NHS Trust. 

I have been a member of the Committee for the Diploma in Hand Surgery which is responsible for setting standards for Hand Surgery nationally in the UK. I am regularly invited to teach senior trainees and Consultants at both national and international meetings.  

I have been a Visiting Professor at the American University in Beirut. During the Covid pandemic I delivered a series of webinars from the St Andrews Centre for Plastic Surgery, Broomfield Hospital with an attendance of up to 250 participants from 36 countries.  

I have also delivered webinars at the invitation of the Departments in Hand Surgery at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and the Pulvertaft Hand Centre, Derby.  

My special interests include:

1. Complex hand and microsurgery including: Arthritis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, De Quervain's Tenosynovitis, Dupuytren’s Contracture, Ganglion, Mucous Cyst, Nerve Compression, Nerve Injuries and treatment of hand fractures.

2. Facial reconstruction following skin cancer surgery, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma.

I also perform the full range of cosmetic surgery procedures.

1. British Association for Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS).
2. British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH).
3. American Society for Surgery of the Hand (International Member).
4. British Medical Association.
