Details

A Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and the Royal College of Physicians, Dr Russell Keenan has been a Consultant Paediatric Haematologist since 2002.

Dr Russell Keenan can act as an expert witness, including the preparation of medico-legal reports and appearing in court, in child protection cases, clinical negligence cases and relating to all aspects of paediatric haematology.

He has solely worked in the NHS for 34 years from 1990 – 2024, including 22 years as a consultant, and now works part time for a private haematology laboratory.

Dr Keenan holds the Cardiff University Bond Solon (CUBS) Expert Witness certification for family court 2025. He has received formal training in medico legal report writing and cross examination at the General Medical Council’s Hallam Centre in 2012.

He has also received training in 2025 in the CUBS courses on Excellence in Written Evidence, Courtroom Skills – Criminal and Civil and Cross Examination and Family Law and Procedure (England and Wales).

His expert witness work has involved some of the most complex child protection and medico-legal cases in the UK.

Through this experience, he became increasingly aware of the pressures facing both experts and legal teams: fragmented communication, repeated requests for the same information, administrative inefficiencies, and unnecessary delays that add cost and risk to already sensitive proceedings, which is why he created the Expert Witness Gateway. The Gateway is a platform designed to make the process of instructing experts more efficient and transparent.

You can instruct Dr Keenan through the Expert Witness Gateway (www.expertwitnessgateway.co.uk).

His specialist areas of expertise include:

Haemophilia’s and other bleeding disorders.

Thrombophilia.

Haemoglobinopathies.

Thalassaemia’s.

Sickle cell disease.

Benign haematological disease.

Malignant haematology.

Leukaemia.

Transfusion medicine.

Dr Keenan’s reports have covered cases of medical negligence relating to paediatric haematology and child protection in relation to the presence or absence of a bleeding disorder.

He has experience of working with barristers and being cross examined in court. He keeps his reports relatively short, focused on the legal instructions, with all scientific and medical language and the basis of any opinions explained and referenced as required.

Dr Keenan can take instructions on behalf of either claimant or defendant or as Single Joint Expert.
