Former positions include: Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Melbourne, Deputy Director of the Australian Institute of Criminology and Head of Research with the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. Earlier he was an educational officer and psychologist for a period of 11 years in four different prisons in Victoria. Currently Professorial Associate in Correction, Charles Sturt University and Consultant Criminologist since 1993. Has appeared as an expert witness in coronial hearings and a number of civil cases related to death or injury of persons in police or prison custody in New South Wales and Victoria.
