Dr Hird has thirteen years experience as a professional economist at the Commonwealth Treasury and most recently at NERA. He specialises in the economics of network industries and has provided expert testimony at a number of regulatory hearings and forums in the telecommunications and electricity sectors including for: Telecom New Zealand, Optus, the ACCC, SPI Powernet, Energy Australia and Integral Energy. Dr Hird's areas of expertise include: cost-benefit analysis, regulatory design, market design, competition analysis, utility pricing, resale pricing and financial analysis.
